“Wise Up!” Health and Relationships Integrity Club

Young people from Black and Asia communities have long lamented that sex and boy-girl relationships are taboo subjects in their homes so they end up making uninformed sexual and relationship decisions. They have also confessed to ignorance with respect to sexual health and support services in the boroughs.

“Wise Up!” Health and Relationships Integrity Club influences Black and Asian young people to adopt a responsible attitude towards sexual health and relationships.

The Project in Barking and Dagenham;

• Recruites part-time Youth Workers to coordinate the Sexual Health and Responsible Relationships Programme for young people between 13 and 19 years old;

• Provides information, advice and guidance to young people about the dangers of unprotected sex and irresponsible sexual behaviour;

• Distributes 10,000 condoms per year to young people through outreach in Discos, recreational centres, shopping malls, outside film theatres, bus stops and other youth clubs within the borough;

• Has developed a programme of referrals to GPs, Parental Planning Agency (PPA), Family Planning Clinics and GUM clinics for check-ups, treatment and further support.

• Facilitates discussions and seminars where young people can talk openly about relationships and sexual matters.

• Influences Sexual Health Promotion by using peer education and outreach to support and train other young people on a range of issues such as teenage pregnancy issues, contraceptives and availability of related services to young people in the borough of Barking and Dagenham.
